Lot No. 145

Gherardo Poli

(Firenze 1674- Pisa post 1739) Fêtes galantes in a palace environment / Feste galanti in un palazzo, oil on canvas, 87.6 X 61.5 cm, framed (2)

Provenance: Hotel des Ventes de Bayeaux 4–3–1990, Jahr 2002: Venezia collezione Grassi

Literaturee: F. Canepa, Gherardo e Giuseppe Poli. La pittura di capriccio nella Toscana di primo Settecento, Ospedaletto (Pisa) 2002, schede nn. 45 – 46 p. 89

Both paintings, offered here, which were published by Canepa in 2002, belong to a homogeneous group of works by Gherardo Poli, and depict chivalrous scenes against the backdrop of landscapes with ruins. He specialised in veduti and capricci in the Venetian tradition and often repeated the same motifs in varying compositions. The high quality of the present works and their vivid, glowing colours indicate that they were produced during the artist's mature period (shortly after 1730).
